Easy Guitar Lessons – The Basics
Strings
The best place to start when you are a beginner is to get to know your instrument. First up, lets take a look at the strings, on normal guitars there should be six of them. Each of the strings will be of a different size and have a different note value. Remembering the notes that are associated with each string can be tricky at first but there are tricks to help you learn such as mnemonics.
One easy to remember mnemonic is the following “Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears”. So starting from the first string (bottom) to the last sting (top), the notes are E, A, D, G, B, E.
Frets
After you familiarize yourself with the strings you will need to learn about frets. If you have a look at your guitar neck you will notice metal strips that run across the guitar. These metal strips are what are called “frets”.
You will see that a grid is formed on your guitar by the strings and the frets. You play a note by putting your finger on a string between two frets. If you are right-handed then you will be using your left hand for fretting and your right hand will be used for picking. Make sure that you are not pressing your fingers on the actual frets, to play correctly you need to be pressing between the frets, not directly on them.
Positioning
The following points will help you to learn how to hold a guitar from a sitting position.
Sit on the edge of your chair and do not hunch your back. Position the guitar in your left hand and hold it close to your body. The neck of the guitar needs to be pointing left and slightly upwards.

The guitar should be supported by your left leg (if you are right-handed)and allow the dip (sometimes called a “waist”) of the guitar to rest on your lap.
Comfortably place your right forearm on the lower bout, keep it aligned with the bridge of the guitar and you will be in the optimal position. In this position your hand should be close to the stings and it should be comfortable for you to sustain this position (after a bit of getting use to).
The left hand should be positioned with the thumb resting on the on the top edge of the guitar neck. The other four fingers should be placed on the stings on the fret board. The positioning of the fingers will be determined by what note or chord is being played.
Now you have the basic down, you know about guitar strings and the note that corresponds to each one. You have identified the frets and you know the way to play them is by pressing your fingers between the notes, not on the actual metal strips.
